Great River Mental Health offers Mental Health First Aid training

September 5, 2012

Great River Mental Health is offering a free two-day Mental Health First Aid course from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 2 and Wednesday, Oct. 3, on Great River Health Systems’ campus, 1221 S. Gear Ave., West Burlington. It is open to the public.

People are more likely to encounter someone having a mental-health crisis than someone having a heart attack. Mental disorders are more common than heart disease and cancer combined. Mental Health First Aid teaches a five-step plan for offering initial help to someone showing symptoms of mental illness or a mental-health crisis, and connecting them with the appropriate care from professionals, peers, social groups or self-help materials.

Mental Health First Aid is a proven method for helping reduce the stigma connected to mental illnesses. It is led by certified Mental Health First Aid USA instructors.

Attendance both days is required to earn a certificate. Class size is limited; a minimum of 12 registered participants is required. To register or receive more information, please call Great River Corporate Education at 319-768-4070.
