SHIIP is a free, confidential service of the State of Iowa that provides unbiased information to help Iowans make decisions about Medicare and other health coverage. People should enroll in Medicare as soon as they turn 65. The 2013 Part D enrollment period is from Monday, Oct. 15, through Friday, Dec. 7.

“About 400 people in Des Moines County will turn 65 by the end of the year,” said SHIIP volunteer and seminar presenter Fred Kelly. “The seminars will be helpful to them and caregivers of people enrolled in Medicare.”

Five trained SHIIP volunteers at Great River Medical Center will provide one-one-one help with all aspects of Medicare. To make an appointment, please call 319-768-3342.

“We are proud to offer SHIIP through Great River Medical Center’s Volunteer Services Department,” said Staci Fry, department director. “Having five volunteers this year will ensure quicker service, especially during the busy Part D enrollment period. We’re grateful for our volunteers’ dedication.”
