Hospital to Host Party for Inpatient Rehabilitation Patients

September 11, 2009

Great River Medical Center's inpatient rehabilitation staff will host a party for current and former inpatient rehabilitation patients on Thursday, Sept. 24.

Social time begins at 4:30 p.m. in the hospital's cafeteria followed by dinner at 5 p.m. and a special program at 5:45 p.m. Patients may be accompanied by a guest. Those interested in attending may R.S.V.P. by Thursday, Sept. 17 to (319) 768-4200.

Great River Medical Center's inpatient rehabilitation program provides treatment to patients with:

  • Brain conditions
  • Degenerative and progressive neurological and neuromuscular disorders, such as multiple sclerosis and Parkinson disease
  • Orthopedic conditions
  • Spinal-cord conditions
  • Stroke
  • Traumatic brain injuries

The goal of the program is to help patients disabled by injury or illness develop the skills to live as independently as possible. The inpatient rehabilitation program is designed to ease patients' transitions from the early stages of hospitalization to their return to functional, fulfilled lives. Patients remain in the same facility throughout the stages of their injury or illness, and the hospital's experienced staff and sophisticated equipment are readily available to provide support as needed. This gives patients a continuity of care that is distinctive among most rehabilitation facilities.

Great River Medical Center's rehabilitation program includes a 15-bed inpatient unit and Snake Alley Rehabilitation  -- an inpatient therapy area that includes an automobile, mock grocery store, and homelike bedroom, bathroom and kitchenette so patients may practice activities of daily living before going home from the hospital. In 2008, the inpatient rehabilitation program received the highest level of professional accreditation from the Committee on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities. This three-year accreditation is awarded to organizations that have undergone a rigorous peer-review process and have demonstrated that its programs and services are of the highest quality.
