Great River Medical Center recertified as area trauma facility

Great River Medical Center has received three-year recertification as an area trauma-care facility by the Iowa Trauma Care System. The system ensures that people throughout the state receive the appropriate level of care for traumatic injuries. It also helps ambulance services determine where to take patients for treatment.

Based on their resources, Iowa’s 119 hospitals are classified into four types of trauma-care facilities:

· A resource facility provides all surgical and critical-care services for traumas. It also has extensive research capabilities. The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics is the only resource trauma-care facility in Iowa.

· Regional facilities provide many surgical and critical-care services, but may transfer patients to a resource facility for specialized treatment such as burns. There are six regional trauma-care facilities in Iowa.

· Area facilities have resources to provide initial stabilization for trauma patients. They may provide surgical or critical care. Patients may be transferred for specialized surgery or care. Besides Great River Medical Center, there are 18 other area trauma-care facilities in Iowa.

· Community facilities have the resources to provide initial stabilization for all trauma patients while preparing patients for transfer when needed. Some have surgical capabilities. Most Iowa hospitals are community trauma-care facilities.

Traumatic injury is the leading cause of death for people in Iowa from 1 to 44 years old, and it is one of the most-common causes of hospitalization. An estimated 30,000 Iowans are evaluated and treated for injuries each year.
