Health System Donates 11,000 Food Items to Area Pantries

January 9, 2003 – Great River Health Systems employees collected more than 11,000 nonperishable food items, resulting in the most-successful canned-food drive in the health systems’ history and, most importantly, helping fill seven local food pantries.

“This year's canned-food drive was incredible,” said President and CEO Mark Richardson. “At a time when many families in our community need help, Great River Health Systems employees reached out to make a difference. It says a lot about the caliber of people that work here."

The health system donated a total of 11,044 nonperishable food items to these food pantries: Burlington Homeless Shelter, Henderson County, Ill., Louisa County, Salvation Army, Southeast Iowa Neighborhood Action Organization, St. Vincent de Paul Society and the YWCA Battered Women’s Shelter.

“When I saw the load from the hospital come in, I was ecstatic. It was really needed,” said Capt. Allen Otto of the Salvation Army. “We’re in exceptionally good shape coming out of Christmas. They just kept coming back with food.”

Great River Health Systems employees also donated new shoes, boots and socks for children at Grimes School, the hospital’s school-business partner through the Burlington/West Burlington Chamber of Commerce. The totals were: 37 pairs of boots, 56 pairs of shoes and 326 pairs of socks.

In addition, several departments adopted families for the holidays, providing food, clothing and gifts.
