November 22, 2011

Doug Peters, MD, a West Burlington family physician, has been named the 2011-2012 Iowa Family Physician of the Year by the Iowa Academy of Family Physicians (IAFP). The presentation was made at the IAFP Annual Meeting Installation Banquet, Friday, November 18, 2011 at the West Des Moines Sheraton.

The Iowa Family Physician of the Year award is presented to one outstanding physician in the state who best exemplifies the tradition of the family doctor and who epitomizes the finest standards of family health care. One of Dr. Peters patients had this to say about him. “I recognize a Physician and a person who is fully dedicated to family medicine.  When I owned and ran a large Agricultural company I wanted people on my side that had a passion for what they were doing.  Dr. Peters has that passion for what he is doing, and I am glad he is, and was on my side. ”

As the Iowa Family Physician of the Year, Dr. Peters will become Iowa’s nominee to the American Academy of Family Physicians for the 2013 National Family Physician of the Year.

Dr. Peters attended Wartburg College where he received his Bachelor of Arts in Biology.  He received his medical degree from the University of Iowa College of Medicine. Dr. Peters completed a family medicine residency at Quad Cities Genesis Family Practice Residency Program in Davenport.  He has practiced at the Burlington Area Family Practice Center in West Burlington, Iowa for the past 11 years.  He is also the Chief of Staff at Great River Medical Center.

Dr. Peters and his colleagues, as family physicians, are trained in many areas of medicine including pediatrics, geriatrics, internal medicine, psychiatry, surgery, obstetrics, gynecology and community medicine. This gives them capability to treat more than 85 percent of all illnesses found in children and adults.

The Iowa Academy of Family Physicians has more than 1500 members and is a constituent chapter of the American Academy of Family Physicians, which is the largest medical specialty society in the United States with a membership of more than 86,000 family physicians, family practice residents and medical students.
