GRMC’s Fry Becomes Child Passenger Safety Technician

May 11, 2001 – Great River Medical Center Health Educator Jeannette Fry recently was certified as a Child Passenger Safety Technician. The four-day course was offered by the Iowa Department of Public Health and the Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau.

Course topics included federal legislation and safety standards, crash dynamics, vehicle occupant protection systems, correct installation of child restraints and planning child-seat checkup events.

“I didn’t realize the dynamics of choosing and installing a child restraint before I began working on car seat-safety checkups with the Des Moines County Health Department,” Fry said. “The vehicle restraints child-safety seats are all different, so you have to work to find the right fit for safety. Most car seats are not installed properly.”

Health department employees Mary Margaret Wagner and Abby West also are child passenger safety technicians.
