Great River Medical Center Receives State Performance-excellence Award
December 6, 2006 – Great River Medical Center has received a 2006 Iowa Recognition for Performance Excellence (IRPE) Silver Achievement Award. Governor-elect Chet Culver has been invited to present the award at the annual Governor’s Recognition of Performance Excellence Celebration beginning 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 22, 2007, at the Hy-Vee Conference Center in West Des Moines.
“We’re extremely honored to be recognized at the silver level with our first application,” said Mark Richardson, Great River Medical Center’s president and CEO. “This award is a reflection of the commitment to excellence in patient care and customer service shared by all of our employees, volunteers and medical staff.”
The prestigious IRPE awards, which are administered by the Iowa Quality Center, were established seven years ago to recognize those businesses and organizations in the state that have completed a strenuous review and evaluation of:
• Business results
• Customer and market focus
• Human-resource focus
• Measurement, analysis and knowledge management
• Process management
• Strategic planning
The process is aligned with the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, and the Criteria for Performance Excellence are used for the assessment.
“The application criteria are specific to health care, and they are designed to get to the core of how an organization operates today and how it prepares for the future,” said Lynette Collier, executive director of Development at Great River Medical Center. “The application process is a proven method to help organizations achieve their highest potential and become more competitive in the marketplace.”
Since the program was developed, 25 awards have been presented to organizations for their achievements at three different levels: one at the gold level, nine at the silver level and 15 at the bronze level. This year, John Deere Credit became the award program’s first Gold Achievement Award recipient. Besides Great River Medical Center, other 2006 silver-level recipients are Facilities Planning and Management at Iowa State University, St. Luke’s Hospital (Cedar Rapids) and The HON Company-Oak Steel Plant (Muscatine). Cedar Rapids Community School District, Eaton Corporation (Shenandoah), and Hearth and Home Technologies (Mt. Pleasant) received 2006 Bronze Achievement awards.
“Our application was completed with input from all areas of the hospital, and many people from throughout the organization met with the IRPE examiners during a one-day site visit in October,” said Teresa Colgan, vice president of Quality. “The entire process was a tremendous learning experience for us as it helped us identify strengths and opportunities for improvement. Our intent is to build on what we learned this year, reapply in 2007 and strive for gold-level recognition.”
