David Carlson, M.D., Named Iowa Family Physician of the Year

August 16, 2005 – David Carlson, M.D., is the 2005 Iowa Family Physician of the Year. He received the award Aug. 12 at the Iowa Academy of Family Physicians annual meeting in Des Moines. The award is presented to one outstanding physician who best exemplifies the tradition of the family physician, and who epitomizes the finest standards of family health care.

Dr. Carlson also is Iowa’s nominee for the American Academy of Family Physicians’ Family Physician Award, which will be presented in 2006.

“I’ve been a friend and colleague of Dr. Carlson for more than 15 years, and I have always thought that he exemplifies everything that defines a great physician,” said James McCabe, M.D. “His inexhaustible drive for quality care for our patients can’t be rivaled. He richly deserves this award.”

Dr. Carlson and Dr. McCabe were among four physicians who helped established Burlington Area Family Practice Center in 1990. It was the first building on the health-systems’ campus. The practice has grown to 13 physicians.

“Dr. Carlson is the center of our family’s care. He’s the hub of a wheel that keeps our health care going,” a patient wrote in a nomination letter. “As busy as he is, Dr. Carlson quickly responds to requests. We rarely sit in the waiting room for long, and he apologizes for 10-minute delays as regretfully as if we’d been waiting for an hour. He greets us with a handshake and never rushes our time with him. He listens carefully.”

Besides providing patient care, Dr. Carlson worked with the Southeast Iowa Community Action Organization to establish the Medical Assistance Program. In four years, the program has provided more than $1 million in free medication for low-income residents without health insurance.

“Dr. Carlson has firmly established himself as one of the finest hysicians in the Burlington area,” said President and CEO Mark Richardson. “Beyond his outstanding clinical skills, there are many qualities that make him a special physician. He is a recognized leader in establishing quality protocols in his own clinic and within the hospital medical staff.”

Dr. Carlson completed his undergraduate degree at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, and received his medical degree from the University of Iowa. He completed his residence in family practice at Baptist Medical Center in Kansas City. He is certified by the American Board of Family Medicine.
