May 18, 2005 – This month, 25 area organizations will be presented with disbursement checks from Great River Health Systems Community Endowment Foundation. The amount provided by Great River Health Systems to these organizations totals $100,642, which is the most funding provided through the program in its five-year history.
The disbursement checks will be presented at 8:30 a.m. Thursday, May 26, in the Oak/Walnut conference rooms at Great River Medical Center, 1221 S. Gear Ave., West Burlington, Iowa. Representatives from each organization will accept the donations, and the public is welcome.
The Community Endowment Foundation was established in 1999 to help foster the development of health-care services that may otherwise not be available to the community. The foundation was funded by a $1 million grant from the Great River Health Systems Foundation. Great River Health Systems received funding requests for 56 projects. The Community Endowment Foundation Board of Directors reviewed all applications and selected this years recipients based on community need and relevance to the foundations health-care and health-improvement mission.
Organizations/projects receiving funding support from the Community Endowment Foundation are:
Burlington High School Activities Department--Improve fitness level of students through an education program
Burlington High School Chapter, Students Against Destructive Decisions--Provide general support for program
Caring CommUNITY, Inc.--Fund a lice-eradication project
Danville Community School District--Purchase an automated external defibrillator and training equipment
Danville Firefighters Association Purchase two automated external defibrillators, and stabilization struts and tele-cribbing for overturned auto extraction
Danville Lions Club--Purchase a special camera and film that helps in early detection of optical problems in children
Hope Haven Area Development Center Corporation--Purchase mobile adult changing table
Med-Force--Purchase a ventilator and four channel pumps
Mediapolis Public Library--Purchase health-education material and sponsor health-care professionals as speakers at the library
Morning Sun Community Ambulance Service--Purchase a portable suction unit
Notre Dame Elementary School--Purchase an automated external defibrillator
Prevent Child Abuse Iowa-Louisa County Council--Purchase supplies for children
Retired and Senior Volunteer Program of Des Moines County--Coordinate transportation for elderly and their medical appointments
Southeast Iowa Area Breastfeeding Coalition--Provide breastfeeding education
Southeast Iowa Community Action Organization--Support the Medication Assistance Program
Southeast Iowa SAFE KIDS Coalition--Purchase safety equipment and provide education for children
The NEST of Des Moines County--Purchase health-care items for young children
Wapello Community School--Purchase an automated external defibrillator
Wapello Fire and Rescue Outfit a fire engine with an automated external defibrillator, oxygen system and suction unit
West Burlington School District--Purchase equipment for cardiovascular disease prevention education
Wever Fire and Rescue--Replace hydraulic power unit with a new electric-powered unit
Yarmouth Volunteer Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department--Purchase extrication clothing and a small portable generator with lighting
YMCA/YWCA Domestic Violence Shelter and Sexual Assault Program--Provide prescription assistance and help pay for medical and dental care for women and children who are victims of abuse
Young House Family Services--Purchase health/hygiene kits for clients
