OWI Program for First Offenders
Great River Addiction Services offers an educational program for people convicted of first-offense Operating While Intoxicated. The weekend class, conducted in a strict hotel setting, is another choice for Iowa's requirement of 48 hours of jail time plus a drinking-and-driving class. It is for low-risk offenders.
The 22-hour state-approved class provides information for making decisions about drinking and driving. The program begins at 5 p.m. Friday and ends at 1 p.m. Sunday. When clients are not in class or eating meals, they must remain in their rooms. Telephones and visitors are not allowed.
The OWI class is accepted by courts, attorneys and jail administrators as a good alternative for people who are not likely to be habitual offenders. For more information or an application, please call Great River Addiction Services at (319) 768-3725.
